I too read about this book in the WSJ, thus prompting my purchase. And, like another review I just read, agree that it is written with an anti Christian perspective. But, it is incredibly beautifully written. (And I love the Southwest too.) If you are a Christian, it may very well make your more thankful for your faith and perhaps generate a prayer for the the author and his family as they continue to fight cancer. So well written! I ordered this book after reading a review in the Wall Street Journal. The book's thesis sounded intriguing-- an author who is battling cancer decides to follow in the literal steps of the old Spanish padres as they stake their lives and their eternal souls on the effort to bring Christianity to the Indians. Perhaps, I thought, there was a glimmer of longing for the Christian faith in the author's own consciousness as he faced his own mortality! But then I began to read the old tongue-in-cheek tropes about "The One True Church" and its "True Believers" imposing their faith on a different (but of course, "equal") culture. I am willing to acknowledge that violence was wrongly done in the name of religion, but not the idea that all cultures are equal. And I don't have the time or patience to read a book that fails to recognize the good, the true and the beautiful that Christianity possesses.I returned my copy.
